Tips to help disguise thinning hair

Thinning hair can be the symptoms of various medical conditions, hormonal issues, vitamin deficiencies, stress or systemic inflammation. I’ve seen thinning hair on ladies of all ages, have it checked out by the doctor to see if the root cause can be found as it could be something that’s easily treated. Meanwhile here are some quick tips to help disguise the look of thinning hair:

  • Create volume by setting your hair on large heated rollers so that the hair stands up creating the look of fuller hair.
  • Backcomb the roots to keep the hair lifted as this will fill the scalp area with hair which helps to give the illusion of more thickness. More…

Asian bridal hair ideas – plaits & braids

asian bridal plaits
Bridal plait and braid ideas.

Traditionally South Indian brides wear their hair in a very long plait adorned with fresh jasmine flowers which just smell heavenly.  Mehndi and sangeet nights are also wedding events where I find many brides like to keep their hairstyles traditional with long braids. I’ve created a few designs for those wanting something a little different yet still keeping the feel of the traditional three strand plait. How to do a bun using a donut

Here is a quick and simple technique for long hair using a hair donut to create a soft casual bun. Once you have got used to wrapping and pinning your hair around the donut you will be able to whip this up in a matter of minutes. The key here is to not be too fussy as it’s meant to be a little untidy and soft looking so the look is young and casual.

Start with your hair in a ponytail and the donut around the base of your pony without any hair grips.

How to tighten a ponytail

A tight ponytail has to start with a tight elastic, but what if your hair elastic isn’t the perfect fit? We all have different thickness of hair so sometimes you are left with not enough elastic to go around a second time leaving a loose ponytail that’s not tight enough to hold. Here is a simple way to tighten the elastic band to give you a secure and tight ponytail. More…

Tips for putting up long hair

Most hair styles which are all up will start off with a ponytail, sometimes this basic initial step can be the hardest, the hair can either be too long to manage, too silky to stay put or just too heavy to hold tight and secure. These problems can also make it difficult to make the ponytail  look neat and tidy. It’s important when putting up hair to start off with a tight and secure base as this is what will be holding everything together so here are some tips on how to get it right. More…

How to clean your make-up brushes

How I clean my makeup brushes

There are two ways to clean your make-up brushes, either with soap and water or a specific make-up brush cleaner. I prefer to wash the natural hair brushes in water as I feel they get a proper clean with the water circulating right inside the middle of the brush. More…

Oil cleansing

I’ve been oil cleansing for a few years now and I find it suits my skin much better than any of the other cleansers I’ve tried in the past, I also love making my own products as they are so much more purer and natural than the majority of the shop bought ones. Everyone’s skin is different and reacts to different products in different ways so what works for one person my not be suitable for another so experiment and see if it suits you. Some experience mild detox reactions and find their skin takes a few weeks to settle down before they see the full benefits of oil cleansing.

Jojoba oil

Jojoba oil (pronounced ho ho ba) comes from the jojoba bean and is actually a liquid wax, it’s structure is the closest match to our own natural oil (sebum) produced by the skin, this is what makes Jojoba oil perfect for all skin types.  It will moisturise dry skin and help to balance oily skin by tricking it into thinking its already produced enough oil, so if you have oily skin or oily areas then after cleansing apply a little Jojoba oil to those areas to help prevent excess oil being produced. The anti-inflammatory properties of the oil make it good for acne skin too, a useful website if you are suffering with acne is acne.org

Home made skin serum

You can’t beat making your own skin care, your skin absorbs everything you put on it so it makes sense to be in control of the ingredients going into your products. I don’t use skin serums every day but I do like to add them into my skin care routine a few times a week usually at night under a light moisturiser or an aromatherapy facial oil (always home made).  Skin serums give your skin a boost of nourishment and allow your moisturiser to penetrate further into your skin preventing moisture loss therefore hydrating your skin. Here are the ingredients for the home made beauty serum that I make.  More…

Tips for building a make-up kit

I thought I would share some pointers on how to build a professional make-up kit for those who are just getting started. Your kit is never going to be complete, it will be constantly evolving as you keep refining it, taking things out and putting new things in its going to be an ongoing process. It becomes impossible (for me anyway) to carry around everything and its difficult to leave little things out just in case you might need it, so it’s a good idea to break your kit down, have a basic kit and then extra small bags of additional kit for the more specialised jobs that you don’t get everyday. It might take you a while to figure out what you are typically going to use for each job but you will soon start to notice that some things just sit in your kit unused for years, this is when you realise it needs to come out.  If you are doing a photoshoot then try to find out the type of looks you are doing and if possible the model you are working on so you get a good idea of what you will need to bring.
